This past weekend in New York City, we celebrated Gay Pride along with social and political progress.  The 43rd annual parade marked the one-year anniversary of the legalization of same-sex marriage.

Some people have the misperception that Gay Pride in New York City is just a bunch of screaming queens with boas and heels parading down Fifth Avenue.  But the reality is, it’s truly a celebration of individuality, liberation, fabulousness, and love for the entire community.  I witnessed every possible combination of marchers, spectators, and supporters: straight couples, gay couples, lesbian couples, bi-sexual love triangles, transgendered beauties, drag queens, straight parents with their children, gay parents with their children, and tons of celebrities like Grand Marshal of the parade, Cyndi Lauper.  Politicians included Mayor Bloomberg, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Senator Chuck Schumer.  There were even Jewish groups, Christian groups, and Mormons all marching to celebrate equality.

I often find myself dreaming of the day when we no longer require labels to define who we are or what we do in our bedrooms.  From a scientific perspective, there are as many infinite variations of sexualities as there are personalities.  To embrace those infinite variations truly celebrates individuality as well as humanity.

In other news, I received an email from a mortified fruit fly this week that tops all other Pride debacles to date.  Hands down, it’s the funniest most embarrassing story I’ve ever read (sorry LM).  Perhaps you all can chime in with your advice for her too:  What’s A Gay Pride Weekend Without A Lil’ Poop?
